Controversy Erupts Over Russian Presence in Mexico’s Independence Parade

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Mexico, Oksana Dramaretska, on Saturday (16.09.2023), criticized President Andrés López Obrador for allowing a Russian military contingent to participate in the country’s Independence Day military parade. This comes amid Russia’s ongoing war against Ukrainian territory that began a year and a half ago.

“The Civic-Military Parade in CDMX, tarnished by the presence of a Russian regiment: their boots and hands are stained with the blood of war criminals,” the diplomat expressed in a post on her X account.

Dramaretska also reproached the Mexican leader for allowing Russian soldiers to take part in the parade on Friday, September 16.

“How consistent is your policy of neutrality and condemnation of Russian aggression against my country, Mr. López Obrador?” the diplomat questioned.

On Saturday, in addition to the Russian contingent, delegations from 19 other countries participated in the parade, classified as “friendly” by the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena).

Among the nations present were Belize, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, South Korea, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Russia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
