  Este artículo explora la simbólica importancia de los mineros a lo largo del tiempo en las luchas sociales y laborales.   En 1935 el famoso realizador holandés Joris Ivens estrenó un documental mudo llamado “Borinage”. Su documental se considera la primera pieza de cine militante y narra sin palabras la vida de los mineros belgas de la mina del Borinage, declarados en huelga en 1932 y duramente reprimidos por la policía. Para realizar el documental, Ivens contó con la ayuda de los mineros, cuyo derecho a reunión estaba suspendido y tenían que esconderse de casa en casa. Los negativos de la película eran enviados cada dos días a Bruselas para evitar la confiscación por parte de la policía, y los mineros cooperaron en gran mesura, ayudando y escondiendo a los realizadores e –incluso- tomando ellos mismos la cámara para filmar escenas de su vida cotidiana. La región del Borinage y sus luchas obreras ya habían inspirado mucho antes a Vincent van Gogh, quien pintó a los mineros y cuyo a apoyo a sus luchas le valió ser despedido de su puesto como pastor evangelista en la zona.

  Más de medio siglo antes, el gran escritor francés Émile Zola había escrito su obra cumbre, Germinal, a propósito de la miseria de los mineros belgas. La novela, un icono de la literatura realista, se convirtió –como más tarde lo haría el documental Borinage- en una de las primeras obras narrativas militantes. Y el tema, naturalmente, era el mismo: las pésimas condiciones laborales de los mineros, la gestación de la huelga y la terrible represión que cae sobre ellos.  Las pésimas condiciones laborales de los mineros y los continuos abusos que sufren parecen ser un tema recurrente entre los artistas. En clave mucho más reciente, muchos recordarán la película “Tocando el viento”, que narra las amarguras de los mineros ingleses durante la época Tatcheriana. En Chile ya andan preparando la película sobre los mineros atrapados, aunque éstos todavía no han sido rescatados. Más de 150 años después de Germinal, muy poco ha cambiado. Leer Germinal hoy en día no dista mucho de leer los reportes de Pasta de Conchos.

  Pero si los mineros y las minas se han convertido con el tiempo en un icono de la literatura y el cine militante, esto no ha sido casual. De manera recurrente, los mineros han sido los trabajadores más combativos, en parte a causa de sus durísimas condiciones de trabajo, y en parte también –cómo olvidarlo- porque las revoluciones tienen la no tan inaudita costumbre de comenzar en las minas. En 1934, los mineros asturianos protagonizaron en España la “revolución de Asturias”. Los mineros se alzaron en armas contra el gobierno republicano y fueron durísimamente reprimidos por –adivinen- un joven y prometedor general llamado Francisco Franco. El pintor anarquista Helios Gómez ilustró en sus láminas en blanco y negro de “Viva Octubre” los momentos cumbres de esta revolución! En lo que ha venido siendo una constante en las luchas sindicalistas, los mineros han sido siempre los primeros en alzarse contra la opresión, en parte porque sufren como nadie unas condiciones de trabajo espantosas, y en parte porque, a causa de su familiarización con los explosivos, están mejor posicionados que cualquier otro grupo de trabajadores para tener acceso a y usar explosivos.

  Cananea no es una excepción. La revolución mexicana comenzó antes en Cananea que en ningún otro lugar, y por ello esta mina se convirtió en un símbolo. Ahora, cien años después, y a apenas 7 días de la celebración del centenario de la Revolución Mexicana, los mineros de Cananea vuelven a alzarse. La historia nos ha enseñado que a los mineros –los más oprimidos entre todos los trabajadores, y también los más difíciles de quebrar- hay que tomárselos en serio. Sin embargo, pareciera que desde los tiempos de Germinal, desde los tiempos del Borinage y desde Asturias no hemos aprendido mucho…
